It taught us to be quiet and gave Mom a break.We caught catfish and bluegills. What I remember most was Dad cautioned us to be careful around the catfish whiskers as they would sting. If he was right, then catching catfish by putting your hand in a hole or catching them by hand would involve pain. I don't know if you ever caught catfish, but getting them ready for eating is more of a chore than other fish. They do not have scales like most fish. Dad would start by pounding a nail through their head and into a board. This would help to hold the catfish still while you made an incision just around the head and peeled the skin away with something like pliers.
